Home Security Systems: Costs, Companies and How to Choose

A good home security setup does three jobs: it deters break-ins, it alerts you (or a monitoring center) the moment something goes wrong, and it helps you prove what happened afterward. This hub collects every Fortress Home Guide article on alarm systems, professional monitoring, cameras, video doorbells and smart locks, so you can work out what your home actually needs before you talk to a salesperson.

Start here: the four decisions that shape your system

  • Professional or DIY installation. Pro-installed systems cost more up front but are wired, tested and often bundled with monitoring. DIY kits are cheaper and portable, which suits renters.
  • Professional or self-monitoring. Professional monitoring typically runs an estimated $20 to $60 a month and can dispatch police, fire or medical help. Self-monitoring sends alerts to your phone and costs little or nothing.
  • Contract or month-to-month. Many big-brand plans require a 36 to 60 month contract in exchange for discounted equipment. Read the cancellation terms before you sign.
  • What you protect. Entry doors, ground-floor windows, the garage and the main living area matter most. Add smoke, carbon monoxide and water-leak sensors for whole-home protection.

What home security costs (estimates)

Equipment for a typical three-bedroom home ranges from a few hundred dollars for a DIY kit to $1,000 or more for a professionally installed system with cameras. Installation is often free or discounted with a monitoring contract, and monitoring is the recurring cost that adds up over time. Our cost guides break these numbers down by system type so you can compare quotes line by line.
